Management of the elderly with behavior disturbances

Abstract

Behavior disturbances are one of the important symptoms in the elderly admitted to the emergency unit. Most common behavior disturbances that need to urgent intervention are aggregation, agitation, suicidal enterprise, acute deterioration of cognitive functions, consciousness, and assessment of reality while they may result from different reasons. If the symptoms which have been accepted as behavior disturbances emerge acutely in hemodinamically stable elderly, acute illness has been considered. It should be assessed if behaviors disturbances are associated with neurological symptoms. Acute illnesses should be treated if it is exists than nonpharmacological methods should be tried. If it is needed, pharmacological treatment should be started providing proper dosage with proper duration.
