Assessment of the of anemia in the elderly referred to the emergency unit

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of anemia, and the effect of some social, demographic, and healthy features in patients 65 years old and older who referred to the Ege University Emergency Unit (EU) between December 2009 and May 2010. Materials and Methods: This study is cross-sectional study, conducted on 521 patients and which examined laboratory and hematologic data out of 607 elderly ≥65 years old referred to the Ege University EU between December 2009 and May 2010. The dependent variable was anemia. Anemia was defined by a decreased hemoglobin concentration ( Results: The frequency of anemia was found to be 63%. The mean age was 76.4± 6.7, and 52% were female. The mean hemoglobin concentration was 11.8±2.3 gr/dL (11.5±2.2 for women, 12.1±2.4 for men). Patients with anemia had 76.6% normocytic 14%, microcytic 9.4% macrocytic anemia.
