Social determinants of health among older people

Abstract

One of the vulnerable group in community is the elderly people who particularly suffer from social and economic deprivation. Gender, age, race, ethnicity, education, socioeconomic status, living standards, geographic location, poverty, loneliness, social isolation and social exclusion are important social determinants of health among older people. Social determinants are powerful predictors of health inequities and disparities. Understanding the effects of social factors on health and actions on the social determinants of health for elderly people are vital. This article reviews literature on the importance of social determinants in shaping health of elderly people.
