FOREIGN LANGUAGE FLUENCY AMONG EGE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL FACULTY STUDENTS

Abstract

Foreign language (English) proficiency was questioned in a randomized group of students who attended general surgery clerckship during the 2001-2002 educational year. 80 % of the students stated that they either did not know English or had insufficient knowledge. The overwhelming majority of the students fluent in English were those who studied this language since early teenages. There was no correlation between linguistic fluency and medical school success (>('=0.018, p=0.693). These results contradict with the policy of adding a whole year for teaching English during medical education.
