Multicenter stenotrophomonas maltophilia outbreak associated with arterial blood-gas syringes: Single-center analysis and literature review

Öz

Aim: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an emerging nosocomial pathogen increasingly recognized as a cause of device-associated infections. We describe a hospital outbreak linked to contaminated arterial blood-gas syringes and compare findings with simultaneous outbreaks reported nationally. Materials and Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted at … University Hospital between September 2021 and February 2022. Active surveillance, environmental sampling, and epidemiological investigations were performed. A focused literature review was also conducted to identify concurrent S. maltophilia outbreaks in Türkiye. Results: A total of 115 patients with clinical S. maltophilia infections were identified. Contaminated arterial blood-gas syringes were confirmed as the outbreak source. Following the device withdrawal and reinforcement of infection control measures, a rapid decline in new cases was observed. The literature review revealed similar device-associated outbreaks during the same period. Conclusions: Contamination of commercially manufactured arterial blood-gas syringes can lead to significant healthcare-associated outbreaks. Immediate source identification, product surveillance, and coordinated national responses are crucial to prevent widespread transmission.
