THE EFFECT OF METABOLIC CONDITION ON THE BRAIN DAMAGE RELATED TO GLOBAL ISCHEMIA AND REPERFUSION

Abstract

It is thought that ischemic preconditioning prevent the brain tissue from global ischemic damage. Hower the role of metabolic effect in the ischemic process has not yet clear. In this study, we produced global ischemia in the brain of the rats, than examined the neurological, metabolic and histological changes. In 3 months old rats, by the methods of bilateral carotid artery occlusion and hypovolemia, 48 hours after 5 minutes ischemic preconditioning following 10 min ischemia was produced. Neurological changes and arterial blood gas analysis were examined. Brain tissues of animals were stained with 2, 3, 5-triphenyletetrazolium chloride (TTC) and examined under light microscope. Rats showed ataxia and coma like symptoms. We observed the heterogeneously disseminated infarct areas, cell necrosis and edema which were independent from severity of ischemia. In our study we speculated that preventive effect of ischemic preconditioning in the damage of neuronal tissue is debate due to environmental factors. Similarity between preconditioning and ischemia groups and non-standardizations of metabolic conditions may effect these results. Future studies are required to explain metabolic effects on ischemic brain damage.
