TEMPERAMENT TRAITS IN A GROUP OF CHILDREN DIAGNOSED SEPARATION ANXIETY DISORDER

Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine the children diagnosed Separation Anxiety Disorder in preschool period and define temperament traits related to the risk factors. The study group included 60 children diagnosed Separation Anxiety Disorder aged 4-6. In the control group, there are 60 children without any psychopathology matched with study group according to age, gender, school grade, family type, family's socio-economic level. Children with DSM-4 diagnosis of Separation Anxiety Disorder and normal controls assessed with socio-demographic data form and Behavior Style Questionnaire (BSQ) filled by their mothers. BSQ was applied to define temperamental traits of the children. Children diagnosed with Separation Anxiety Disorder were shown less rythmicity, had irregular biological functions compared to normal controls. Separation Anxiety Disorder subjects were shy in their first response to a different or new environmental stimuli and it has gone on for a long time. Their responses to new stimuli were more violent, restless and unhappy and they give up work more quickly when there is a distracter compared with controls.
