The evaluation of the distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility profile of strains isolated from urine specimens at a university hospital

Abstract

Aim: Urinary tract infections (UTI) are first in community and hospital acquired infections. Anatomic localisation, predisposing factors and gender are effective factors in infection. Therefore young women and elderly patients particularly have more risk. The most common isolated bacteria is E.coli. Increasing resistance is reported in microorganisms causing infection. Regional antimicrobial resistance data are important in empirical treatment due to variations in resistance among other regions. The aim of our study was to evaluate the strains and their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern isolated from urine samples at our recently opened University Hospital Microbiology Laboratory. Materials and Methods: Urine samples sent from various departments to the University Hospital Microbiology Laboratory between 17.10.2011 – 30.08.2012 were included in the study. The identification and antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates were studied by the automatized Vitek version 2.0 system (Biomerieux, France). Results: 348 strains out of 937 urine samples were taken into the study. The most frequently isolated strain was E.coli (52%). All members of Enterobacteriaceae were susceptible to carbapenems. The most susceptible antibiotics were carbapenems (100%) and amikacin (88.9%). The least susceptible ones were ampicillin (34.2%) and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (51%). E.coli strains had 38.6% ESBL positivity. Conclusion: There is growing resistance in most of the microorganisms causing urinary tract infections. The resistance profile in urinary tract infections varies in different centers and for this reason, this data is important for our recently opened university hospital.
