The attitude and knowledge levels towards safe medical instruments usage in the dentistry faculty students

Abstract

Aim: The dentistry faculty students may be exposed to needle and sharp object injuries during their clinical studies. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of needle and sharp object injuries and their attitude and knowledge levels about safe medical instruments usage in the dentistry faculty students Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study was completed with 296 students at 5 different grade levels in a dental faculty. Sociodemographic information form An Attitude Scale Towards Safe Medical Instruments Usage of Healthcare Workers were applied to the students who participated in the study. While evaluating the obtained data, descriptive statistics and Mann Whitney U and Kruskall wallis tests were applied for the relationship between categorical data and scale score. Results: The mean age of the students was 20.44±1.46 years, 68.2% (n=202) were female and 50.7% (n=150) were from Central Anatolia and 35.1% were injured with needle and sharp object. Of the injured students, 59.6% (n=57) were ≥21 years age and 78.9% (n=76) of injuries occurred in third grade. Of the students, 23.2% (n=68) stated that they had previously trained for safe cutting-tool usage. The average of the Attitude Scale Safe Towards Medical Instruments Usage (SSMIU) score was 105.22±13.89 points.Female students' mean scores were significantly higher than the male (p<0.001). The SSMIU mean score of senior grade students is higher than the other students. (p=0.022ae, p=0.007de). Conclusion: Needle and sharp object injuries are highly prevalent among dentistry students. The education and precautions to be taken are the most effective way to protect the student from infectious diseases and injuries. Training of our students on the safe medical instruments usage should be increased, awareness of the necessity of vaccination against hepatitis B should be created and the importance of accident reporting for students and health care workers should be emphasized
