HISTOLOGIC EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF CHRONIC MELATONIN ADMINISTRATION ON RAT OVARIAN TISSUE

Abstract

There are many studies about the effects of melatonin on reproductive system. This study was performed on 26 female Wistar rats divided into two groups; the control group and the experimental group. The experimental group was injected with 1 mg/kg/day melatonin subcutaneusly for 21 days. Ovaries of both groups were investigated under light microscope. Compared to the control group, findings indicating atresia of most of the follicles, vasodilatation of vessels in stroma, medulla and follicle's theca layer were observed in the experimental group. In addition, Graaf follicle numbers were significantly low in the experimental group. As a result, chronic melatonin administration caused morphologic changes on ovaries accelerating atresia of follicles which might lead to negative effects on fertility.
