EVALUATING THE SKIN CANCER RISKS AND SUN-PROTECTION PRACTICES OF STUDENTS

Abstract

To be subjected to ultraviolet rays (UV) during childhood acts an important role in development of skin cancer in later years. Research shows that 70% of total hazards that sun causes occur before 18 years of age. This is a descriptive field study which was planned to assess skin cancer risks of secondary school students and their applications towards avoiding from ultraviolet rays. This research was carried out with 695 students who were willing to participate in the study and who were between 12-15 year old age group attending to two secondary schools affiliated to District of Bornova Directorate of National Education between the dates of 20 April-20 May 2003. The mean age of students was 13.29 ±1.11. When their risk status in relation the skin cancer were evaluated, it was observed that 35.7% of the students had light colored hair, 34.5% had light colored eyes, 38.0 % had birth marks or many moles and 18.4% experienced sun burn to the extent of the blisters.
