Training of family planning counselling for third grade students in Ege University Medical Faculty and student evaluation

Abstract

Aim: For an adequate approach and appropriate communication with patients, it is important to develop a sufficient knowledge, attitude and behavior among medical school students considering reproductive health care. Acquisition of counseling skills will increase efficiency and quality in service delivery and enable better accessibility. This study aims to introduce a training program for family planning counseling for third year students in the Faculty of Medicine at Ege University and to evaluate that program. Material and Methods: All third year students (n=273) during the 2006-2007 academic year at Ege University Faculty of Medicine composed the target population. Among them, 258 (%94.5) were enrolled. All of the enrollees completed the evaluation and feedback form at the end of the training. Results: The public health vertical corridor which is shaped with a prevention and community health perspective had needed small group practices in fostering awareness for characteristics and delicacy of family planning counselling services and counselling skills training for achieving the aims in this block, considering reproductive health. The content and techniques of the training have been determined in this context. In the evaluation form, among the 14 items considering definition, methods of family planning and counselling, 11 of them were answered correctly by more than 96%. Considering positive feedbacks, among the training techniques the most liked were role-play, short film and group study. Conclusion: This training has been efficient in transferring knowledge and introducing the students with the appropriate skills and behavior. The positive feedbacks about the techniques used and the content of the training reveal that these techniques have contributed affirmatively to learning and participation.
